Klein Poodles

Maverick Maverick is 19 inches tall and a really nicely put together boy. He is a Klein black and white with a great personality. Klein Poodles are a perfect size for those of us that are older and want to continue to have a standard but the full size is limiting. I have also had folks tell me they are a perfect Motor Home size and are great guard dogs and companions for those that travel. Still with the clownish and impish attitudes of the Standards they are equally as loving and outgoing. In the US the Klein size really does not fit into either the Mini or standard category although you can successfully show the Kleins in the UKC (United Kennel Club) conformation ring. Many breeders dispel this size but as I have gotten older I have enjoyed that I am able to continue to raise and show my small standards. If I could not have them I would have to give up the standards and go to a smaller size as in the Miniature. We do have a couple of very special Miniatures but my first love is the standard Poodles and now the Klein Poodle. |
Comparing the European and United States sizes.
In the U.S. we have three sizes of the Poodles Standard, Miniature and Toy. The sizes are able to be bred together and according to the breed standard governed by PCA, (Poodle Club of America) all three should be the exact same except for the height. In Europe the FCI (Fédération Internationale Cynologique) governs the standard for the Poodles.

Germany and
many European countries have four sizes of the Poodles: Toypudel: Under 28cm (10.92") Zwergpudel: 28cm to 35cm (13.78") Kleinpudel: 35 cm to 45cm (17.72") Grosspudel: 45cm to 62cm (24.18") The colors acceptable by the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) are White, Black, Apricot, Red, Brown and Silver. However, the DPK (Deutscher Pudel-Klub E.V.) the German Poodle Club, accepts Partis in Black and White, Phantoms in Black and Tan. Reds have recently been approved by the FCI. There is given, a small variation to the height of the Poodles. |
The U.S. has three sizes of the
Poodle. Toy Poodle: Up to 10" Miniature Poodle 10" -- 15" Standard Poodle Over 15" The colors acceptable by PCA are all solid, Apricot, Black, Blue, Brown, Cafe Au Lait, Cream, Gray, Red, Silver, Silver Beige and white. AKC accepts registration for the Partis in many colors. PCA governs the standard and colors acceptable in the conformation ring whereas AKC governs the colors to register and those that can go in the performance shows. Hence the reason that Partis are not acceptable in the conformation ring. |
Many people have asked me what the temperament of the Klein Poodle is. I have to say that I have imported two males and one female from Germany now and I have been extremely impressed with the all the Poodles. My new boy, Beethoven is a wonderful handful of a childish imp. He is into everything and wants to look inside everything just to see what is in there. He has to touch everything to see what it feels like and has to be right by my side no matter what. Right now he has a plastic bottle that he is tossing all over the computer room. Of course he is supervised when playing with anything that is destructible to him. When Casey first got here he was exactly the same, as he has grown into the most handsome loving boy he has quieted down some. We thought Casey was the smartest Poodle we had ever owned but I can tell you that Beethoven comes a very close second. The first six months after Casey arrived were the most challenged of my life with a Poodle and now I am in that challenge again with Beethoven and I just love it. If Beethoven produces the same quality pups as Casey has done I will be very happy. Thank you to both the Le Papillon and Von Der Herbordsburg Kennels for my wonderful boys.
